Diploma Module 9 - Wedding Photography - Part 2 (achieved Grade A)
21/02/10
For this assignment I was to ask a couple of my friends to pose for me, pretending that they are getting married.
The assignment submission was for a minium of 5 photographs, plus an essay outlining how I dealt with Weather conditions, Backgrounds, Use of room available and choice of poses.
I was lucky enough to photograph a wedding in July last year, so I already had enough images to submit.
My tutors comments were as follows:
"Thank you for your assignment, it is great that you were given the chance to photograph this wedding as it was great experience for you and it will look great in your portfolio. Make sure you have a good selection printed up in an album or portfolio to show your next clients. It sounded like you had a very successful day although not without its challenges, but you will get this with all weddings. I would have liked to have seen a little more variety in your selection as it sounded like a very interesting day which isnt fully shown in your selected images. However the images are of a high quality as im sure are all the others.
I hope that this has inspired yo and given you confidence to carry on with further weddings when given the chance. Many thanks"

Diploma Module 8 - Wedding Photography Part 1 (achieved Grade A)
21/02/10
My assignment involved me creating a Wedding questionnaire that will list all the questions that I would need to ask future clients. To ensure that I ascertain as much information as possible so that on the big day I can be confident that I know exactly what they want.
My tutors comments were as follows:
"Thank you for your assignment, you have got a well thought through questionnaire and it is professional looking and easy to follow and fill in. You may be able to edit it slightly as some questions can wait until after the wedding, such as size of images and whether they are matt glossy etc.
It may also be useful to know what time the couple will sit down for their wedding breakfast as the time between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast is when the majority of your photos can be taken. Don't be afraid to inform the couple of how much time you need for this, at least an hour is good.
Also finding out where and when you can take photographs and use flash photography is up to you to find out, the couple will be more at ease if you know the answers to these questions yourself.
Overall a great questionnaire."

Diploma Module 7 - The Great Outdoors (achieved Grade A)
26/05/09
My task is to go out in my local area to take some photos of local wildlife. Again 5 images are required for submission to my tutor.
I am pleased to have received a Grade A. My tutors comments were as follows:
"Thank you Jenny for your assignment. These photographs are excellent and your patience has paid off. The depth of field in your images is good and makes for a very interesting photo, bringing the subject more to the foreground. The colours and details are also very good which can sometimes be a challenge when taking a photograph in a rush.
A great assignment"

Diploma Module 6 - Manipulating your Digitial Photos (achieved Grade A)
21/05/09
Post image processing using Adobe Photoshop, The Gimp or similar.
My task is to deliberately shoot 25 terrible pictures, out of focus, to far away from subject, red eye, in a dull room with no flash etc.. in high resolution to enable manipulation. I then have to use digitial manipulation to correct them, merge two together, experiment... nothing is silly. Submission of 6 photos, 3 befores and 3 afters.
26.05.2009
I am thrilled to report a Grade A.
My tutors comments read as follows:
"Thank you for your assignment. These photographs are very good and you have done well to improve them digitally. I like the tools that you have used and you will find these very useful in the future no matter what genre you decide on. You have shown that you have a good understanding of digital manipulation well done. I look forward to your next assignment"

Diploma Module 1 - Photography as Living (achieved GRADE A)
25/11/06
Module one involved no photographic work, but an essay about myself, my interests and my aims. What are my photography goals? How do I see photography fitting into my life? What domestic responsibilities do I have? Am I employed, self-employed, seeking work, a home-maker or retired?
What education or training have I had? What do I see as my strengths and weaknesses?
How would I judge my life until now? Has photography played a part in it? Is photography a major change for me or is it an extension of what I already do?
This module will give you an insight into who I am.
There are not photographs for this module, but here are some highlights from my essay, which was written in November 2006.
"I have always been an artistic person but did not pursue any form of further qualifications. I looked into photography as an option at college, but regrettably it was an expensive choice that my parents were unable to fund. Having 3 daughters of similar age they were somewhat limited with the ability for financial support. Instead I chose art and enjoy doing sketching and watercolour, but I only manage to do one piece a year, sometimes less frequently.
I have always enjoyed capturing moments on camera – family and friends, weddings, christenings, milestone birthdays, Christmas or just that special moment between two people. I have received some pleasing feedback and encouragement from family and friends, to pursue a career in photography. Photography is after all another form of Art and digital photography is instant. I had always thought about it, but didn’t think that I was good enough; I guess I don’t give myself enough credit.
Up until last year, my life has been pretty normal, with nothing really to give me that buzz. Now that I have a daughter and photography has become more than just a hobby, I feel like my life is heading in a whole new and exciting direction and I would like to take it to that next level.
For the short term, I wish to gain a qualification in photography, which will provide me with the know how and ability to create ‘that special picture’, to be able to create the correct lighting, or to make use of what I have, how to compose a picture and the do’s and don’ts of professional photography. I look forward to completing this course and fulfilling my dream.
For the long term, I would like to think that I would be able to create a successful business for my husband and I, something that our daughter and any other children we may have, will benefit from.
I am confident that this course with the Institute will provide me with the stepping-stones that I need to get from a boring mediocre job to becoming a Professional Freelance Photographer.
As a new mother who also works part-time, I will not be able to dedicate as much time as I would like to the course however, I will be putting in as many spare hours as I can, to get it completed as quickly as possible without rushing."
